SAPP Programme

About SAPP II

The Sustainable Agriculture Production Programme (SAPP) II will be implemented over a 7-year period (2024-2030) and will be implemented in four districts in Malawi. These include; two old Sustainable Agriculture Production Programme (SAPP) districts, namely: Lilongwe in the Central Region Balaka in the Southern Region. .

The two new additional districts include; Mzimba in the Northern Region and Dowa in the Central Region. The International Fund finances the programme for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Malawi Government and the programme beneficiaries.

Programme Objectives

Goal

To contribute towards wealth creation, and improve food and nutrition security among the rural population of Malawi.

The Project Development Objective (PDO)

To commercialise agriculture production and enhance the resilience and productivity of smallholder farming systems of rural men, women and youth in selected districts of Malawi by 2030

Target Beneficiaries

SAPP II is expected to reach an estimated 0, smallholder households equivalent to 0 people. Further and through the scaling up of on-going livestock pass-on scheme in the two SAPP phase one districts, an additional 89,448 beneficiaries will be reached, with 53,728 goats and 787,200 chickens that will be passed on during the life span of SAPP II. This will include 50% women, 30% youth and 5% PWDs and other vulnerable groups. The project design identified the following target groups from the following socio-economic groups:

Programme Financing

Funding Structure

SAPP is primarily financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a United Nations specialised agency and international financial institution. The Government of Malawi co-finances the programme through counterpart contributions.
